eBooks and file management help - You're done with an ebook - now what?

[Cloud Library users] [Freading users]

Cloud Library Users: You can let a book's checkout period expire on its own, or you can return a book early.

You are encouraged to return books early, if you have finished, since all books in the Cloud Library are only licensed for one reader at a time.

When using the Cloud Library, any time you are viewing the detailed information view of a book, you have the opportunity to 'Check In' the title. You can also see the Check In button when using the list view in the My Books tab.

All books checked out with the web app or with the PC software will be saved in your Documents > My Digital Editions folder (by default).

Checking in a book early will not remove it from the computer, even though it will no longer show in the shelf view of the 'My Books' tab of the Cloud Library. You can manually delete these epub and pdf files using Windows Explorer.

Also keep in mind that deleting a book does not return it early. Your user account in the Cloud would still see it as checked out to you, even if you have removed it from your computer.

Deleting a book from a device, e.g. Nook or Sony reader.

Deleting books from reading apps on mobile devices

If you are using the 3M Cloud Library iOS or Android apps, the book will be removed by the app when you return it or if its checkout period has expired. Similar to the PC software, opening the information view or the list view under 'My Books' will give you the opportunity to return any books currently checked out.

If you are using the BlueFire app on your Apple device instead of the 3M Cloud app, then you can tap on the information icon next to the title in the Library View (arrow icon in a blue circle) and the select delete from the options. However, this will only delete the book file from the device, not from the Digital Editions folder on your PC. See instructions above for removing outdated files from your Digital Editions folder. [help with Bluefire]

If you want to return the book early, then you will need to log in to your Cloud account using one of the 3M mobile apps and return the book as detailed above.

Using a Kindle Fire? If you are using the Aldiko app, as recommended in this help file then books you have downloaded and transferred are listed in the Files > Digital Editions folder. To delete in the app, go to the home screen of Aldiko and select list view. At the List View, tap on the "More" icon (down arrow in a circle) to the right of a book title and then select the 'Delete' icon. You can also delete a book by connecting the Fire to your PC and using Windows Explorer to open the Fire's Digital Editions folder to find the file.

If you want to return the book early, then you will need to log in to your Cloud account using one of the 3M mobile apps and return the book as detailed above.

Freading users: any user can have a book at any time and you cannot earn more tokens by returning a book early. For this reason, it is not necessary to return books early.

However, expired books will remain on devices, mobile apps and in Adobe Digital Editions and your computer, so it is good practice to remove them from time to time.

To delete the book from Adobe Digital Editions, open the library view

Click on the arrow to the left of the title of the book.

Click on 'return borrowed item' or 'delete item'.

Close Digital Editions and then check the Documents > My Digital Editions folder on your PC to see if the file or jacket cover images remain. It is safe to remove these if you are finished with the book.

Deleting books from reading apps on mobile devices

If you are using the Freading app for iOS (iPad, iPhone, etc) open the Freading app and select the home view. Tap and swipe across the title. Select 'delete' to remove the item.

If you are using the Kindle Fire app for Freading: To remove a book you have finished, open the app and go to the library view. Tap and hold the title in the library view until the book options menu appears. Select delete to remove it. Deleting the title within the app will remove it from the device. If you wish to manually delete titles (not using the app), the app stores them in the Digital Editions folder. Thumbnails of cover art are stored in the Digital Editions > Thumbnails folder and are not always deleted when the book is deleted. Connect the Fire to your PC and use Windows Explorer to open the Digital Editions folder to view and manage these files.
