Setting up an Adobe ID and using Adobe Digital Editions

What is Adobe Digital Editions?

Library eBooks are saved with digital rights management to control the length of the checkout. In order for you to use Freading, you will need Adobe Digital Editions to unlock the digital rights and to enable you to put eBooks onto a eReading device like a Nook. Mobile only users do not need to install Adobe Digital Editions, but will still need an Adobe ID to authorize Freading apps.
For in depth instructions on Adobe Digital Editions, visit the Adobe website

How to get an Adobe ID

First, visit the Adobe website at http://www.adobe.com

Click on the link to sign in in the upper right corner of the screen.

Click on the button to create an Adobe account.

Once you have created your Adobe Account, use the search function on the Adobe website to find Adobe Digital Editions, or go to http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions. Additionally, there is a link to the installer on the Freading site. You do not need Adobe Digital Editions if you will only be using the mobile app to access Freading. However, Adobe Digital Editions is required if you will be connecting a device, like a Nook to your computer to transfer books to it.

Click on the link to launch the installer.

After installing Digital Editions, you must authorize the program with your Adobe ID. You should be prompted to enter your ID, but if not, click on the arrow next to the Library menu item and click on authorize computer.

Using Adobe Digital Editions with Freading

When you find a book on the Freading site, you can click on the link to download. Many books are available in both epub and pdf formats. Select the format you would like, if needed, and then click on the Open with button on the dialog box that pops up. This will save the book into your Adobe library. * If you do not have this dialog box, make sure that you are not blocking popups from Freading and that the *.acsm file type is associated properly with Adobe Digital Editions. See instructions below to check the file type association.

Adobe Digital Editions will open and you will see a list of books that you have checked out. Adobe will also indicate the days left on your checked out titles.

To transfer the book to a reader, like a Nook, connect your device with the USB cable. In the home or library view of the Adobe software, you will see your device. To transfer a book to the device, simply click on the name of the book in the library view and hold down the mouse button while you drag the title to the device listing on the left. A green circle with a plus sign will appear to indicate that you can let go of the mouse button to drop the title into your device.

Disconnect your device and start reading your book!

I have installed Adobe Digital Editions, but my eBooks are not being downloaded directly to it.

If your downloaded item is not showing in your Adobe Reader, and the Reader does not open by default when clicking the download button in Freading, check to make sure that the file type 'acsm' is properly associated with Adobe Digital Editions.

Windows XP or older:

  1. Go to Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
  2. Select the 'File Types' tab.
  3. Scroll down to the "ACSM" file type.
  4. Make sure that the extension is set to open with Adobe Digital Editions. If it is not, click the 'Change' button and select Adobe Digital Editions.
  5. Click 'OK' as needed to save the changes and exit the open windows.

  2. Click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program".

  5. Click 'OK' as needed to save the changes and exit the open windows.

MacOS:
